Mohit Kumar Jolly ’17 receives Outstanding Young Alumni Award

Alumnus honored for publication record, contributions to cancer dynamics research.

Mohit Kumar Jolly

The George R. Brown School of Engineering and the Rice Engineering Alumni board recently announced Mohit Kumar Jolly ’17 as one of the recipients of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award

The Rice Engineering Alumni board first presented this award in 1996, with William H. White ’86 honored as its inaugural recipient. This award celebrates the accomplishments of Rice engineering alumni under the age of 40.

Jolly is an associate professor of bioengineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His research integrates bioengineering, mathematical modeling and physics to solve complex problems related to cancer metastasis and therapy resistance.

As a leading scholar in cancer dynamics research, he has a publication record of more than 150 publications and 10,000 citations. He serves as the editor-in-chief of npj Systems Biology & Applications, a leading international interdisciplinary journal that presents research covering computational and mathematical approaches to understanding complex biological systems.

He has also served as the co-chair of the Mathematical Oncology subgroup of the Society for Mathematical Biology, which focuses on integrating mathematical and computational models to better understand and predict cancer progression and treatment.

Jolly is a recent recipient of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics prize, which recognizes “outstanding and original contributions in physics by young scientists from, and working in, developing countries.” This is the first time that this prestigious prize was awarded to a scholar of biological and biomedical systems.

He earned his Ph.D. from Rice and his B.S. and M.S. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, all in bioengineering.

Jolly will be honored along with the rest of the 2024 class of award recipients and the 2023 honorees at the George R. Brown School of Engineering Alumni Awards Celebration on September 12, 2024.
